Straight from the horse’s mouth…
Many of our students keep coming back for more… more of the same to cement their skills or more of something else to broaden their horizons. Whether it’s your 1st or 21st visit, you can be sure of a warm welcome.
But don’t just take our word for it! We asked some students – and people we’ve worked alongside – to be honest about their time with us. Here’s what they wrote in our visitor’s book…
Perfect combination of classroom and practicals. Loved the informal family atmosphere, a cracking lunch and lovely cider at the end!
Thank you Jim & Kate.
Rob, Longtown, Lambing
Great course. Started knowing little with no confidence; left with much more knowledge and loads more confidence. Thank you.
Judith, Worcestershire; Sheep Husbandry
Awesome day! Super fun, excellent cider, superb dinner… loved every moment.
Iain, Scotland; VIP Day (stag)
It was really good and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Paul, Usk; Sheep Husbandry
Very good experience and I learned a lot, including the right apples to use!
Phill, Powys; Cider Making

Beware of the Beavans! They will change your life. I spent the best part of seven months on their farm as a trainee shepherd for Lambing Live. When I arrived I barely knew one end of a sheep from another. Now I have my own flock, my own farm and I’ve just gone through my first season of lambing on my own (but with Jim and Kate on speed dial). They will give you a rare and privileged insight into farming life; you will laugh a lot, learn a lot, and you may even get to drink some of their very fine cider, if Jim hasn’t finished it…
Kate Humble; TV presenter, wildlife ‘champion’
and our first graduate!

Having worked at lambing time with Jim and Kate, I can honestly say their high standards of animal husbandry, attention to detail and understanding of their stock; combined with a deep commitment to traditional farming values and genuine passion for wildlife and the countryside, are just so refreshing; quite simply great people and a great place to be.
Adam Henson; Lambing Live, Countryfile & Cotswold Farm Park
Brilliant! It’s a great venue with a very sensible and practical approach to training; supportive and positive throughout. AND best food ever on any course I’ve been on.
Tom, Weston Under Penyard; Shearing
A wonderful experience for non-farming types!
Allan, Shropshire; Lambing
What a fabulous day! Lovely people, wonderful food – an amazing experience – oh, and we learnt to make cider too!!
Russell & Lindsay, Lancashire; Cider Making
So much to see, smell, taste – a true sensory experience. Great fun, great company, great day.
Lin, Abergavenny; Taste of the Goodlife
Brilliant day. Course has been fantastic and has given me the confidence to go back and help with lambing.
Chris, Scotland; Lambing
Great course and a real help for me… someone who hadn’t got a clue. Will now be able to tackle a lot myself.
Sue, Presteigne; Sheep Husbandry
Absolutely wonderful experience. Really enjoyed the day, fab hosts, great food, scrummy cider, hic.
Dave & Kath, Ammanford; Cider Making
This was an extra-special email to receive…
Maria from Birmingham, here. Not sure if you’ll remember me, but I did a lambing day with you back in Jan 17. I was a total townie and had never done much more than see sheep in fields on occasional holidays in the countryside.
I loved the day I spent with Jim and yourself, and you really sparked an interest in all things rural and farming. Since that day I have spent time on many small holdings via an organisation called wwoof. I’ve done various horticultural activities; helped to look after goats, pigs and chickens; and learned how to milk cows, by hand and machine.
I have also connected with a small farm in Yorkshire who keep about 120 sheep – Suffolk’s, Herdwicks and Texels. I spent a week with them early this year during lambing, and am right now planning my visit to them again next spring.
My inner love of farm/rural life from my childhood was re-ignited by you guys, and the fantastic experience you gave me, so thought you might be interested to hear that I did go on to have more farming adventures.
I hope you are both well and enjoying life. Thank you for inspiring me to go on to have some fantastic experiences.
Fab day river dipping, poo identification, spotted a vixen, a duck with her ducklings and lots of lovely damselflies.
Clare, Cwmbran; Taste of the Goodlife
Thank you for giving me the confidence to go home and shear my own flock now (your food and cider is pretty damn good too!)
Derek, Barry; Shearing
THE BEST COURSE! Had a great time and learnt so much. Best crash course for lambing ever. Fab food, so friendly: a really good hands-on course.
Jennifer, Walsall; Lambing
Excellent; off to plant my orchard!
Paul, Llandovery; Cider Making
Really good, thank you. I’ll definitely get those Wiltshire Horns down now!
Jeanie, Bishops Frome; Sheep Husbandry
A fantastic day, it was so informative, lunch was delicious, venue splendid, and so were the staff. Will definitely recommend it.
Steve, Staffordshire; Lambing
Absolutely great day. Learnt a lot via excellent teaching, and really nice to see a working farm run by people who care.
Andrew, Tredegar; Sheep Husbandry
An excellent experience all round. Very patient with first-timers! Thank you and we’ll see you again soon.
