Great Tre-rhew: home to livestock, wildlife and the BBC’s first series of Lambing Live

Great Tre-rhew means “home of the frost”, but there’s anything but a frosty reception here!  It’s a traditional, welcoming, family farm: 300 acres nestling in the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside where Tre-rhew brook meets the Trothy River.

There’s been a farmstead at Great Tre-rhew since at least the 12th century and it’s been providing a home and a livelihood for the last 4 generations of our family since 1940. We’re lucky to live in such a magical place, home to many red listed birds, plus otters, herons, kingfishers, brown trout, stunning wildflower meadows and much, much more; all co-existing happily with our sheep, cattle, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks and arable enterprises; we even produce our own honey.

Farming traditionally and sustainably, we’re proud to produce prize-winning stock year after year, to have Red Tractor farm assured status and to be able to support three generations of our family, all living here on the farm. Our meat is slaughtered locally and supplies our family shop – Beavan Family Butchers – in Abergavenny, maintaining our ethos of maximum animal welfare and minimum food miles.

During winter our animals are lucky enough to be housed in some amazing, listed historic buildings. You may recognise the lambing sheds if you watched Lambing Live, but we also have remnants of the corn mill which supplied nearby White Castle (the castle is right next to our top field; with its moat, towers and “drawbridge” it’s just like you draw castles as a child) and Kate’s Country School ‘classroom’ is the granary of our restored 17th century barn, above the old cider mill; so not purpose built, but perfect for the job now.

Perhaps best known for being the BBC’s first Lambing Live location, Great Tre-rhew has also featured in The Baker (with Damien Lewis), BBC’s The One Show, Will it Snow and Great British Weather… no surprise it’s in demand really, it’s a very lovely, very unique, very special place.

But don’t just take our word for it – why not book on a course and come discover it for yourself?
