Meet Your Tutors

Kate Beavan… qualified lecturer, Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with a double honours degree in Natural Sciences & Biology and a Masters in Environmental Conservation Management, Kate has over 20 years’ experience lecturing in Animal Management and is a BrightCrop and STEM ambassador and Senior University Fellow. She also finds time to be a farmer, mum of two, eternal optimist and is the Health & Welfare expert for Crufts (channel 4).

Jim Beavan... born and bred here, just like his sheep.  A graduate of Newon Rigg, Penrith with a College Diploma in Hill and Marginal Farming, Jim worked as a shepherd on the Raby estate before returning to the family farm, where he’s become a renowned sheep expert, skilled stockman, BWMB gold seal shearer and professional cider-drinker!

Jack Benson... Kate’s Dad, was a creative writing teacher for 25 years, working with students as diverse as the elegant ladies of Lytham St Annes and the less fastidious residents of high security prisons.  He has had over 1500 articles published, produced three successful books and two CDs, all with countryside themes.

Jimmy Coburn... our great friend, neighbour and highly accomplished cider maker; plus farmer, plant hire specialist and all round “good egg” too.  Jimmy is passionate about creating wildlife ponds and landscaping wildlife habitats; he has an amazing collection of “diggers” and farm machinery at his home “Under the Graig” (our local hill).

We never take ourselves too seriously, but rest assured we take our commitment to you, the quality of our teaching and the content of our courses very seriously indeed.

So why not book yourself a course and pop along to meet us in the flesh?  We’re all much better looking than our photos, honest!
