Living with livestock… certainly keeps you on your toes!

1 day courses 

Course fees cover all course materials, refreshments, two-course lunch and your Kate’s Country School certificate.  Please bring your own wellies and overalls and dress for our lovely Welsh weather!

To make life easy, you can pay securely on-line via PayPal… you don’t need a PayPal account (although they will ask you to register); any major credit or debit card can be used.  But if you don’t fancy wrestling with the technology, drop me an email and we can arrange alternative payment options.

We lamb over 1300 ewes every year and you’ll be part of the team for a day, learning the theory, discovering our “trade secrets” and putting it all into practice right here with us.  Timings and running order will be dictated by the ewes – if there’s a lamb coming, you’ll be on-hand, not in the classroom.

Sheep Husbandry

An in-depth look at breeds, housing and nutrition; plus those all-important techniques for care of feet, body condition scoring, dagging and managing parasites including faecal egg counts. A very practical course aiming at building confidence in handling and performing stock tasks. Find out what to do, when to do it and what to look out for too; get hands-on practice, answers to your nagging questions and practical hints & tips to make things just that little bit easier.

A Taste Of The Goodlife

Whether you're thinking of running your own smallholding or just dreaming about it, this general introduction to livestock, spinning wool, orchards, bees, wildlife and making preserves provides a solid grounding in country skills. Includes routine husbandry of a range of livestock; mixing good hands-on experience with plenty of practical hints and tips, tricks of the trade and insider insights.  Self-sufficiency could be easier than you think!

Sheep Shearing

Shearing is a specialised skill and it is hard work! This course will introduce you to health and safety practices, sheep handling skills and shearing equipment to enable you to develop techniques using both hand and machine shears. Guided by Jim, a BWMB gold seal shearer, and son Sam, we keep numbers low to allow you plenty of time to perfect your skills.
